Wow, Nate must have been tired. He went to bed around 8pm last night but did not wake till 10 am this morning. He is probably jet lagged. After breakfast we all went to the beach. Sabine, Nicole and I and all 4 kids managed to pile into the truck. Nicole was driving at a speed of maybe 40 kilometers and Nate sat in the back telling her to slow down! We just laughed. We arrived at the beach and Nate was scared of the ocean which surprised me since he really loved it in Hawaii but then again the water is apparently very dangerous. You can get you feet wet but definitely not for swimming. The current is too strong. The sun is opposite here. So when you lay out in the sun you face the opposite direction then you would at home. I had forgotten about that detail. We sat there chatting and the kids played in the sand and then we heard Nate say key words, “I wanna eat”. We packed it up and came back home.

We pulled into the parking lot and there was Sylvia who had just gone to pick up Tia Berta. Tia Berta is not blood related to us but was really good friends with my grandmother who passed away when my mom was two. She is an adopted aunt and a very large part of my mom and aunt’s lives. So glad we were able to see her and especially to meet Nate. But Nate requires a lot of my attention and was unable to visit with her as much as I wanted.

The night before I had requested empanadas and when lunch was served up, that’s what we got. Empanadas are like a meat turnover. A pastry filled with onions, beef, raisins, egg and olives. I thoroughly enjoyed it. And of course what would the meal be like without a glorious glass of wine.
After lunch, Sabine and kids headed back to Santiago where they live. Nicole, Nate and I spent the rest of the afternoon poolside. Nate loved it and fought me when I told him it was time to go. Nate and I showered and then I realized that it was 8pm. Sun bright in the sky. When I explained that it was time to go to bed, he did not agree. He kept telling me “Sun not down”. After some coaxing he finally came to bed and this time I made it through 2 stories before he was out.
The house was quiet. It’s amazing how much a home fills up with children and how quiet it gets without them. We spent the rest of the evening watching the sun set while drinking more wine and finishing off the empanadas.
Tomorrow Nate and I are catching a ride with Nicole to Santiago…
